Menorca Experimental

Set on 30 hectares of land overlooking the Balearic sea, Menorca Experimental has all the amenities and luxuries of a magnificent villa, while maintaining the hospitality, coziness, and warmth of a small vacation cottage.

The hotel

Menorca Experimental is carefully restored, radiating modernity and simplicity from its whitewashed facade to its stunning gardens. Forty-three handcrafted and meticulously designed rooms--courtesy of none other than Dorothee Meilichzon--will make you want to stay a while (and that’s exactly what we recommend). As with all Experimental hotels, as much of the original 19th century farmhouse was preserved and given Meilichzon’s signature minimalist, art-deco touches. The hotel boasts elegance, but in an approachable way that will feel like home. Bask in the airiness and openness of rustic, drystone-lined spaces, and enjoy a room with local artisan-made wood plank floors, hand-crafted terra cotta tile, and a calming, warm color palette.

The area

Despite its impeccable design, Menorca Experimental nevertheless offers a charming agrotourism experience. Surrounded by pine groves, vibrant wildflower beds, and vegetable gardens, you can’t miss out on the island’s unspoiled natural abundance. You can take in ocean views from the Cami de Cavalls on horseback, or dive amidst exotic sea species on the close by bay of Fornells. Regardless of how you relish in Menorca’s environmental beauty, the island is a UNESCO-protected biosphere, so you’re sure to find tranquility and allure whether you spend your afternoon on a secluded pebble beach or meditating under the warm Mediterranean sun.

What you must know about Menorca––if you don’t already––is that it is highly preserved. You won’t find beach-front resorts and rarely a parking lot next to the sea. For most beach visits, you’ll need to do a bit of hiking. So don’t expect tropical palm-tree lined beaches outside your door. But that’s not what you came to the Mediterranean for anyway, right? At Menorca Experimental, your location grants you quick foot access to some of the southern coast’s prettiest beaches, minus the often shadeless lengthy walks to the shore. It’s a countryside and beach experience wrapped in one.

Food and drink

The island’s carefully preserved natural bounty comes to life when you enter the doors of the dining room. Dining outside on the terrace enjoying the day’s salty, warm breeze seems like a given, but it might be hard to decide when you see the interior. Rustic farmhouse meets modern minimalist with a 20-person wooden table as the center piece and locally created and colorful crafts adorn this lovely restaurant.

Sustainability is at the heart of every Experimental restaurant, and the farm-to-table dining in this Menorcan kitchen is no exception. Seasonal produce from the house’s vegetable garden and local boutique producers, timeless, yet innovative Spanish recipes, and local wines that taste like summer complement the restaurant’s delicious offerings. After dinner, or anytime for that matter, we recommend a famed drink from the cocktail bar (mocktails are just as delicious for those that forego the party in the glass).

Wellness

Whether you’re vibing relaxation or a party-cation, a good place to start while at Menorca Experimental is in the spa. Multiple types of massages and skin treatments are offered in three designated areas. Also available are the hammam and sauna, plus a tranquil space for yoga classes…all designed at a level you come to expect from this group.

Good things to know

While the hotel is family friendly (babysitters on hand with notice, menus catered to the littles, etc.), it can be lively.. If you’re not into the family-friendly scene in the traditional sense, but do love to bring the littles along, this could be your perfect sustainable stay. The hotel doesn’t allow pets. Children under 3 are free. Additional person charges may apply in certain rooms and/or suites.
